Get To Know the Person in the Mirror

How do you get to know yourself really? What does it even mean to know yourself? Can one even get to know themselves fully? These are all questions that you may think of when you read the title of this post, those are all valid questions by the way. In my opinion though, getting to know yourself involves spending time alone and really listening; much like you would do with any other person you're getting to know.

It's easy to get confused about who we are when we pay little to no attention to ourselves and give lots of attention to other people. Spend some time to focus on yourself, observe your physical appearance and DON'T, I REPEAT, DO NOT COMPARE YOURSELF TO ANYONE ELSE. This is the time you've set aside for you, focus on you, look at you. Look at your hair, whether it be kinky, curly, wavy or straight. Look at your eyes, your ears, your mouth and your nose. Stare yourself down from your head to your toes. Get comfortable with the person that you are. Refrain from comparing yourself to what others look like at school, work or on television. Accept yourself for who you are; and that is a very beautiful individual despite what anyone else thinks. Be honest with yourself when you discuss your likes, dislikes, strengths and weaknesses. I have a big nose, i used to hate it so badly that i would say "i'm doing plastic surgery when i become an adult!" That was when i didn't come to know and love myself yet, i didnt accept who i was so i was constantly comparing myself to others and finding faults.

I can tell you, i've spent a lot of time looking in the mirror and observing all the things i used to hate about myself and realized that there is so much beauty both on the inside and on the outside. I've come to accept who i am, how i look and i love that I'm different. I love my beautiful hair, my bright eyes, my BIG nose, my sweet lips, my short and stubby fingers, i love me. Just like loving anyone else, it takes work and it takes time; you won't get to know yourself in a day and maybe you'll need help to do it but it's necessary and it can be done. Others can really help you to get to know yourself too but the process really starts with you and this is the very vital and first step in loving yourself and others.
